Studio & Safety Information for the Blacksmithing Studio at Peters Valley...

# OF STUDENTS: 9

EQUIPMENT: The Blacksmithing Studio at Peters Valley Craft Center is equipped to handle a variety of forging and metal working techniques. The studio can accommodate up to 9 students per class allowing ample room for students to work. The studio includes coal forges, gas forges, anvils, power hammer, drill press, welders, swages, and hand tools including a variety of hammers, tongs, set tools, guillotine fullers, slitting chisels and punches, and hand power tools such as grinders, sanders, drills and die grinders.

Your instructor will determine which equipment is suitable for use during a class and some equipment may not be available in all sessions. The student is responsible for any damaged and/ or lost items and will be required to pay for the cost of repair and/or replacement of the damaged/ lost equipment.

STUDIO & MATERIALS FEES: Peters Valley sets estimated fees according to supplies your instructor has requested. In a small number of cases, where the price of steel or other supplies has inflated, students will be made aware of a slightly higher fee when they are sent their materials list for the workshop. In the production of their own work, students will be charged for additional materials.

STUDIO SUPPLIES: Students are welcome to bring favorite personal hand tools for use in the studio. If you are not sure, please contact the studio.

A variety of finishing supplies are regularly kept on hand in the studio including paste waxes, linseed and tung oil, various spray paints, and patina chemicals. Instructors may make special requests to facilitate unique processes.

HAZARDOUS WASTE INFO: The school maintains a comprehensive hazardous waste program and asks that you limit the materials you bring on campus to those classified as non-toxic. The material must be in its original packaging. An environmental fee will be assessed for classes generating hazardous waste. In order to limit the hazardous waste generated in the studios, we cannot allow students to bring toxic materials outside of the class supply list into studios. If your class requires hazardous materials, they will need to be disposed of properly. A Hazardous Waste Disposal Fee will be charged in addition to the Studio & Materials Fee.

CLASSROOM LOCATION: The Blacksmithing Studio is located just 2/10 mile past the main office on NPS Route 615 and uses the same driveway as “Valleybrook” Dorm.

SHARED WORKSPACE & EQUIPMENT: Shared air space/ music: Each class should discuss the playing of music and reach a consensus on the time of day, the volume, and the type of music to be played. Tolerance and consideration are expected from everyone.
